National Sabbatical Scheme Advert
Below you can watch an advert for the National Sabbatical Scheme. Members who have completed the scheme share their experiences as well as information from course tutors and college managers on the benefits of the scheme for Welsh speaking members of staff. The scheme is particularly useful for those who would like to increase their confidence in delivering their subject through the medium of Welsh and improving their Welsh language skills.
Example Lesson 1 (Part 1)
The following is a Welsh childcare lesson in a Non-Welsh speaking area. The tutor is Beth Hughes from Yale College, Wrexham and she introduces some teaching methodologies which allows her students to make use of and develop their Welsh language skills within their subject area. Beth makes effective use of asking a series of challenging questions, discussions in groups and pairs as well as written tasks with oral feedback to the class.
Example Lesson 1 (Part 2)
The following is the second part of Beth’s childcare lesson.
Example Lesson 2 (Part 1)
Here we have an example of an experienced bilingual tutor at work. Liz Saville, Sgiliaith’s director, is delivering the lesson to a childcare group in Ysgol Botwnnog. The National Sabbatical Scheme used Liz to present an exemplary lesson as she used to work as a lecturer and is very experienced in the field of bilingual teaching. Liz works through a series of tasks with the class splitting them into language based groups with the Welsh group and the non-Welsh group working on different tasks at the same time. This means that when each group feedback to the class as a whole that new learning can take place during feedback.
Example Lesson 2 (Part 2)
The following is the second part of Liz’s childcare lesson.
Discussion of Bilingual Teaching (Part 1)
Here we have a clip with examples of bilingual teaching from two tutors, Andrew McCabe (Business lecturer) from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and Graham Williams (Catering lecturer) from Coleg Llandrillo. Their lessons are observed and discussed by Dr Cen Williams and Liz Saville.
Discussion of Bilingual Teaching (Part 2)
This is the second part of Cen and Liz’s discussion of the example bilingual lessons they’re observing. A new lecturer is introduced, Alex Morgan who’s a Small Animal Care lecturer in Coleg Llysfasi. She makes effective use of reducing the amount of words needed to explain an action through making a demonstration.
This last video clip shows examples of effective use of resources to aid bilingual teaching and learning. Cen and Liz continue their discussion of the sessions introduced throughout these video clips. We are also introduced to a new lecturer in this clip, Brian Jones, a mathematics tutor from Neath Port Talbot College.
